Docusate

Docusate is a drug, which relieves occasional constipation. It also prevents dry and hard stools.

Drug Uses

A stool softener, Docusate acts by helping water and fat into the stool, which leads to the softening of the stool.

How to use

The drug has to be taken only under the guidance of a doctor. Do not take more than what has been prescribed and do not take the drug for longer duration unless the doctor has said so.

An oral drug, Docusate can be taken with meals or in empty stomach. But always take the medicine with a full glass of water. It is also preferred to take extra fluids while taking Docusate.

Once the drug is taken, it s normal that you can experience bowel movements in one or two days.

Warnings/precautions

It is always better to take the drug according to your doctor’s direction. The drug should not be used for a longer period or taken in larger doss unless prescribed by your doctor.

If the drug is taken in higher doses, there is a possibility that you loss normal functions of the bowl. You have to contact your doctor if you do not experience any bowel movements or if you come across rectal bleeding. If there is any sudden change in the bowel movements, which lasts for more than two weeks, consult the doctor.

Docusate should be avoided if you are taking any laxatives or stool softeners. The drug should not be taken if you experience nausea, stomach pain, rectal bleeding, vomiting. You should also not hesitate to contact the doctor if the symptoms do not improve in a week’s time.

Though it is not known if the drug causes harm to a new born or an unborn, it is better to take Docusate drugs only after consulting your doctor. Before taking the drug, you have to discuss with your doctor about the risks and benefits of using the drug during this periods.

Certain drugs are also known to interact with Docusate. So it is better to tell your doctor about all the medications that you are taking, including prescriptive drugs, non-prescriptive drugs, herbal preparations and dietary supplements. You should also inform your doctor if you are allergic to any particular food, medicines or any other substance.

Side effects

Like all drugs, Docusate also comes with many side effects. The most common side effects seen are throat irritation, bloating, bitter taste, diarrhoea, gas, cramping and irritation around the rectum.

Some of the serious side effects that comes with Docusate are rashes, difficulty in breathing, hives, tightness in chest, swelling (mouth, lips, face, tongue) , itching, nausea, fainting and vomiting.

Storage

Docusate has to be stored away from heat, light and moisture. Keep the drug at room temperature between 68 Fahrenheit degrees and 77 Fahrenheit degrees. The drug should be stored in tight containers. Keep the drug out of the reach of children and away from pets.
